The attractions, shops, and eateries are all designed to look like something Andy could have plopped down on the lawn in his backyard. Since you’re the size of a toy – just like the characters in the films – the scale and size of everything is enormous. And the attention Imagineers paid to minutiae is mind-boggling! Keep your eyes open for all sorts of details as you make a dash for Slinky Dog!
One last word about Toy Story Land: there’s not a lot of shade to be had in Andy’s backyard. Touring can be a hot and humid experience, so plan ahead with sunscreen and beverages to ensure a good time. (FWIW, the restrooms near Alien Swirling Saucers are air-conditioned; so is Jessie’s Trading Post.)
2. There’s a whole lotta wienies going on!
Walt Disney believed that a guest’s sightlines played a significant role in their enjoyment, anticipation, and participation in the park’s offerings. So, he wanted what he called a “wienie” to be placed at the end of every avenue or within every land.
There are actually three contenders for the wienie of Toy Story Land. Entering from Hollywood Boulevard, there’s a 20-foot tall Woody statue that beckons and welcomes you to Toy Story Land. Just beyond, well above the horizon, Rex sits atop a pile of Jenga blocks as part of the Slinky Dog Dash coaster. And entering from Galaxy’s Edge, there’s a 14-foot-tall statue of Buzz Lightyear. All three serve the function of a wienie – plus they add a lot of fun to the Toy Story Land experience. Pausing in front of Buzz and Woody for pictures is probably mandatory when you visit!
3. Three attractions in this backyard, plus some meet-’em-ups!
Toy Story Land is home to one of the most popular attractions in all of Hollywood Studios. Of course, we’re talking about Slinky Dog Dash. It’s proven to be so very popular that without purchasing entry via Lightning Lane, you can end up standing in line for a long, long time. Like hours long time.
The other big draw here is Toy Story Mania! Originally located in Pixar Place and called Toy Story Midway Mania!, it opened a full decade before Toy Story Land was built. When Toy Story Land opened, the entrance was repositioned to “move” it to be part of the land.
Lastly, you can take a spin on Alien Swirling Saucers but beware of the Claw! Although there are only these three attractions, it’s safe to say that they’re all guest favorites! Speaking of favorites, you can meet Woody, Jessie, and Buzz Lightyear here. While not a true Meet & Greet, the Green Army Drum Corps will march through the land at various times, playing marching cadences as they pass.
Other Pixar characters have made appearances, but not on a regular basis. Always check the My Disney Experience app for details and times.
4. Hankerin’ for some grub or souvenirs?
If you get hungry after playing the backyard, one option is the Quick Service stop, Woody’s Lunch Box. Resembling an old-timey lunch box, it’s backed up against an open picture book with the story, “Woody’s Roundup”. The menu is filled with fun lunchbox-y favorites, including the popular Totchos, and Lunch Box Tarts. Woody’s Lunch Box is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but it has a small seating area that can’t hope to accommodate everyone who wants to take a load off here while they eat. Avoid peak hours if you don’t want to carry your food away.
The Table Service restaurant in Toy Story Land is the Roundup Rodeo BBQ. Here, you’re surrounded by a play rodeo Andy set up with everything from western towns to train station playsets. Jessie and Trixie hold the spotlight in one dining space, while Bo Peep and her sheep are the focal point of the other. The prix-fixe, family-style, barbecue-centric menu includes ribs, brisket, and BBQ chicken along with a raft of sides.
And of course, you can stop at one of the drink and snack carts in Toy Story Land to get your cool drink and a Mickey ice cream bar!
Toy Story Land isn’t exactly a shopper’s paradise, but if you’re looking for Pixar-related merch, it’s got you covered. Shopportunities include three stops. The big one is Jessie’s Trading Post at the exit of Toy Story Mania! It features toys, apparel, accessories, and other goodies. Be sure to look up at the ceiling to truly appreciate the details built into this shop! The land also has two small kiosks resembling mobile toys, filled with Pixar merch.
5. Andy’s backyard is full of secrets.
As mentioned earlier, there are scores of details the Imagineers have built into Toy Story Land.
Andy has left a giant-size sneaker footprint at the entrance to Slinky Dog Dash. At 25 feet long, I’ve read that it would be a shoe size 240.
There are more than 400 toy blocks in Andy’s backyard.
You will come across “A113” in a couple of places in Toy Story Land. This is a nod to a classroom at the California Institute of Arts that many Pixar artists attended. One spot is near Woody’s Lunchbox where some blocks spell it out. Keep your eyes peeled for others!
The overhead sign as you enter Slinky Dog Dash says, “by James Industries.” This is a nod to the late Jim Varney who was the original voice of Slinky Dog.
Dining at Woody’s Lunchbox? One of the tables is made to look as if it’s composed of a note Andy’s mother put in his lunch, reading, “You’re my favorite deputy! Love, Mom.”
The line at breakfast. It took Chrissy about 5-6 minutes to get through this line.
Another table is shaped like Babybel Cheese, the sponsor of this quick service spot. A couple of chairs resemble a Babybel that’s been cut in half. You can see them in the photo above, behind the line.
Inside the Rodeo Roundup Barbecue, one of the paper cut-outs over the Popping Corn sign is Russel from Up!
The Bottom Line.
Toy Story Land’s attractions are designed to appeal to younger children, but they’re a favorite with adults as well. Everything in this land is bright, colorful, engaging, and lots of fun. Whether you’re a fan of the films or not, this land makes it easy to enjoy going to infinity and beyond!
